Salmon is the second largest export product in Chile, after copper, it´s one of the most profitable products to sell in the world, specially in the Asian Market, and Chile has a relevant role in the salmon industry worldwide. Today our country is the second producer of salmon in the world, concentrating 25% of world production, after Norway of course. Chile has privileged conditions for salmon farming. Because of its extensive coastline, and the abundance of fjords with adequate T° and good pH conditions, mainly in the south of the country, represent important natural comparative advantages for its farming. The first processes of an experimental nature in our country, date from the 19th century with initial attempts to introduce salmon into Chilean waters. There are even reports from much before about the arrival of salmon through eggs, and from 1905, with the importation of the first legal Atlantic salmon (Salmo Salar) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss) eggs.
